How DPD Tracking Works
Tracking number
A DPD parcel number is 14 digits, and that's the same across DPD's network rather than varying by country — what changes between countries is the first four digits, which identify the depot that created the label.
The last digit is a check digit calculated with a standards-body algorithm, which is why a mistyped number is usually rejected outright rather than returning the wrong parcel.
You'll find it in the sender's confirmation, in the DPD email or text announcing your delivery, in myDPD under your parcels, on a Pickup shop receipt, or on the card a driver leaves.…
One quirk: DPD reuses a parcel number only once in any six-month period, or nine months for cash-on-delivery parcels.
Tracking status
DPD doesn't publish one glossary for the whole group, but its national sites publish their own, and these are real DPD wordings with DPD's own definitions:
Order created — the label has been created and the parcel is still with the sender
Parcel handed over to DPD — collected from the sender, not yet at the sorting hub
In transit — handed over and on its way to the sorting hub
Parcel at terminal — being sorted
Out for delivery — with the courier
Delivered — handed over to the recipient
Some DPD countries call that first stage 'Order data transmitted' instead of 'Order created'. Same thing: the sender hasn't handed it over yet.
What makes DPD unusual is what comes next. Its Predict service gives you a one-hour delivery window that narrows to a 15-minute slot, with the driver's name and your parcel's position in their queue — and while it's in flight you can change the date, send it to a neighbour, nominate a safe place or divert it to a Pickup shop.

Less than you might fear — missing the window doesn’t cancel the delivery, it triggers the fallback your driver chooses on the spot. Typically that means a card, and the parcel going either to a neighbour, a nearby Pickup shop, or back for another attempt the next working day. You’ll normally get a message telling you which, and the record shows the same. Worth knowing that the window is an estimate refined on the morning of delivery, so a driver running ahead or behind can arrive outside it entirely. If you know you’ll miss it, changing the delivery in the app beforehand is far easier than resolving it afterwards.
Standard DPD Pickup Shops hold parcels for 7 calendar days, while DPD Pickup Lockers hold parcels for 3 calendar days (72 hours) because compartment space is needed for subsequent deliveries. Your collection notification message specifies the exact deadline that applies to your shipment, which is the date to follow. Once this timeframe lapses, the parcel starts its return journey to the sender, turning a quick collection into a potential refund conversation. Shops may occasionally accommodate a short extension if you call ahead, but automated lockers cannot. Remember to bring a valid photo ID and your collection PIN or QR code, and check local store operating hours before traveling.
Nominating a neighbour is one of the things this service does particularly well — in-flight changes are available through the app or the link in your delivery message, right up until the driver is close. You can nominate a neighbour, choose a safe place, divert to a Pickup shop, or move the delivery to another day. Two constraints apply: senders can block changes on parcels requiring a signature, and options shrink once the driver is within a stop or two of you. Setting a standing preference rather than deciding parcel by parcel saves repeating the exercise, and applies to future deliveries automatically.
Study the photo properly first, because a surprising number turns out to be your own address from an unfamiliar angle, or a neighbour’s door that looks much like yours. Check the house number if it’s visible, the door colour, the step, the bins. If it genuinely isn’t your property, save the image immediately — these links expire — and note the exact delivery time from the record. Report it to DPD with both details, since the delivery data includes location information they can check against the photo. Tell the retailer at the same time: they carry responsibility for the order arriving and can refund or replace while it’s investigated.
Side by side is where this helps most, because one parcel has a precise window while the others stay vague about the whole week.
