How UPS Tracking Works
Tracking number
A UPS tracking number starts 1Z and runs to 18 characters. UPS tracking forms also accept alternative references ranging between 7 and 20 characters in length:
Standard 1Z Tracking: 18 characters starting with 1Z.
12-Digit InfoNotice Number: Found on the notice left by a driver after an attempted delivery; can be queried directly in place of a tracking number.
UPS Mail Innovations References: A 22-to-34-digit USPS delivery confirmation number, or an 18-digit internal sequence code.
Freight Shipment References: A PRO number, house air waybill (HAWB), or house bill of lading (HBL)
Tracking status
UPS publishes a short, clear status list, and these are their own definitions:
Label Created — UPS has the shipment details from the sender but not the parcel; the status updates once it's in the network
Shipped/On the Way — in the network with a scheduled delivery date; parcels can sit here until final delivery
Out for Delivery — the local facility has dispatched it to a driver
Transferred to Post Office for Delivery — the sender asked for the post office to finish it; UPS suggests allowing an extra day or two
Delivered — delivered, with a timestamp recorded
Delivered to a UPS Access Point — waiting for you at an Access Point
Exception — still in the UPS network, but something unexpected may change the delivery date
Two get misread. 'Label Created' is the biggest source of 'my parcel isn't moving' — UPS doesn't have it yet. And 'Exception' sounds like loss or damage when UPS's own definition is far softer: the parcel is in the network, something unexpected happened, the date may shift.

FAQs About UPS Parcel Tracking
If I change my delivery, will the tracking reflect it?
Usually within an hour or two, though the change registers immediately even when the display takes a while to catch up. What you should see afterwards is a new entry describing the change — a redirect to an Access Point, a rescheduled date, a delivery instruction accepted. If nothing appears by the next morning and the original arrangement still stands, treat the change as not having taken and make it again. The bigger constraint is timing rather than display: once a package is loaded onto a vehicle for the day, most changes can no longer be applied, however promptly the system acknowledges them.
My package is at an Access Point — how do I tell from tracking how long I’ve got?
UPS Access Point locations hold packages for 7 calendar days starting from the arrival date before returning them to the sender. The tracking record itself doesn’t always spell out the exact final date, so the collection notification message or email you received is the best source — and where neither is clear, calling the pickup location directly will clarify the deadline. Collect your package sooner rather than later: Access Points are local retail shops with limited storage space, and they systematically return parcels once the 7-day window expires to keep shelves clear. Bring a valid photo ID matching the name on the delivery label, and check the store’s specific business hours before traveling.
Tracking says a notice was left but I never found one — what now?
Notices go astray constantly — blown off doorsteps, taken by neighbours, left at the wrong flat — so this is common rather than suspicious. The record is your substitute: it tells you an attempt happened and usually what the driver did next, whether that’s another attempt, a transfer to a collection point, or a hold at the depot. Act on the record rather than waiting for the paper to turn up. Delivery changes can normally be arranged online using just your tracking number, so a missing notice rarely blocks anything. When it does, the phone number on the carrier’s site will resolve it faster than another day of waiting.
My cross-border package is held — will the tracking say whether that’s duty or brokerage?
Rarely in those words, which is the frustrating part. Entries tend to say the shipment is in clearance or awaiting information, without distinguishing tax owed to the government from the carrier’s own charge for handling the paperwork. In practice the bill usually combines both, and the breakdown arrives with the payment request rather than in the record. That request is where to look, and it’s worth reading carefully: duty and import tax are set by your country, while brokerage is the carrier’s fee and occasionally disputable, particularly where the retailer indicated duties were prepaid. Verify any request on the carrier’s own site before paying.
The delivery date keeps shifting — normal, or a sign of a problem?
One shift is routine; a pattern of them isn’t. Estimates recalculate as a package moves, so a date sliding by a day after a missed connection or a busy sorting facility reflects the system working rather than failing. What deserves attention is a date that moves repeatedly while the entries themselves stop changing — that combination usually means the package isn’t actually progressing and the estimate is being extended automatically. Two or three shifts with no new location entries is the point to ask. The sender can raise it as the account holder, which reliably gets further than a recipient’s enquiry.
Tracking shows a signature I don’t recognise — how do I find out who signed?
The recorded name is your starting point, and it’s more often explicable than alarming: building receptions, neighbours, family members and co-workers all sign for parcels, and the name captured is whatever was given at the door. Ask around your address and your immediate neighbours before escalating. If nobody recognises it, request the proof of delivery from the carrier, which typically includes the signature image and the delivery location — considerably more informative than the name alone. Take that to the retailer as well, since they carry responsibility for the order reaching you and can refund or replace while the carrier investigates.
Can I be told the moment it’s ready for collection rather than checking?
That’s what alerts are for, and collection is the case where they earn their keep most obviously — the hold clock starts the moment your package arrives at a pickup location, whether or not anyone tells you. Add the number here, switch alerts on, and the arrival entry reaches you the day it happens rather than whenever you next think to look. None of this costs anything, and no account is needed to start. Connect Gmail after a Google sign-in and order confirmations get picked up automatically, which means even the packages you forgot you ordered end up in the same list.

Customer Reviews
Extremely satisfied.
The transparency in delivery is amazing, Bravo!!!
Delivered on time and in good shape. Very efficient. A pleasure.
UPS will routinely not knock to deliver, and drop packages off at a pick-up point instead.
Zero contact from UPS after goods reached Nigeria. No call from UPS for duty, after 4days of arrival. When I called up after great difficulty the duty calculation was sent. Calling up the customer care numbers was a big task.
