American multinational retailer Walmart has announced the launch of a new virtual try-on feature called Be Your Own Model in an effort to market itself as a fashion destination. According to the news release, the new feature gives users the ability to upload full-body photographs of themselves into the Walmart app and utilize those images to virtually try on different articles of clothing.

Following its acquisition of Zeekit in May of last year, Walmart introduced its Choose My Model feature in March of this year, giving customers the option to virtually try on clothes on more than 50 models representing a wide range of body types, ages, and heights. Users of the Walmart app on iOS in the United States will soon be able to upload images directly from the app on the desktop or online. Be Your Own Model for Android will be available in the coming weeks.

The technology, which is presently accessible on more than 270,000 garment products at Walmart, employs machine learning and algorithms that were first used to create realistic topographic maps in order to produce a more realistic experience that makes use of shadows and fabric draping. With this new development, products that are compatible with the updated feature will have a "Try It-On" button added to their pages.
