Walmart has just disclosed their plan to hire 20,000 new supply chain employees as they prepare for the holiday shopping rush. The retailer is opening new full-time and part-time roles for permanent contracts. These new hires will work across over 250 distribution centers, fulfillment centers and transportation offices of Walmart. The special hiring event will be held on September 8th and 9th.

The Covid-19 outbreaks posed many obstacles for the supply chain such as delayed shipping and congested ports. This situation is projected to be even aggravated with the holiday season approaching. To counteract these difficulties, Walmart has invested in high-tech, automated systems. According to CFO Brett Biggs, Walmart also increased lead times for orders and chartered its own dedicated vessels to speed up imports.

However, hiring new employees will still be crucial to not only Walmart but also other retailers. In fact, the competition for hourly workers between employers is heating up. The average salary for a supply chain associate is $20.37 per hour. To make the job post more attractive, they sweetened the deal with special bonuses to warehouse workers and 100% coverage of college tuition and textbook costs for employees.

Other retailers are right behind with equally good deals: Target with its debt-free college program, CVS Health and Walgreens Boots Alliance with their plans to increase the starting wages and lower the education requirements for entry-level jobs.
