The FedEx World Hub is the biggest sort facility in the FedEx worldwide network, with 13,000 team members, encompassing 940 acres with 171 aircraft gates and 84 miles of conveyor belt. It is capable of processing 484,000 packages per hour, according to FedEx.

FedEx stated that its LEED-certified facility spans 1.3 million square feet (MSF) across four levels, has 11 miles of conveyor belt, a space devoted to transporting heavy, non-conveyable shipments, and can sort 56,000 parcels per hour. It additionally said that this facility can process more than half the volume of the primary sort, resulting in faster sort times and the capacity to send customers' parcels more swiftly to their ultimate destinations.

"The Memphis World Hub is the heart of the FedEx global network, and this dynamic, new sort facility is equipped with the latest data-driven technology that enables us to strengthen our hub operations," said Lisa Lisson, president of Air Operations at FedEx, in a release.

C.H. Robinson Is Automating Across the Entire Lifecycle of a Freight Shipment

C.H. Robinson has developed unique technology that leverages generative AI to tackle tasks that are traditionally handled by humans, completely automating the freight shipment process.

This new system interprets incoming emails and replicates human actions, allowing for automation throughout the shipping lifecycle, from pricing bids and load acceptance to pick up and delivery scheduling and shipment tracking.

"In May, we revealed that we were employing our new technology to process emailed pricing requests. Within a few months, we developed new models to automate more shipping stages and have already scaled them," said Arun Rajan, the company's Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer.

C.H. Robinson's AI-powered technology, which was first applied to price quotes, now handles more complicated jobs owing to its integration with the company's industry knowledge and specialized experience across many supply chains. Processing an emailed load tender used to take up to four hours; it now takes only 90 seconds using AI.

The new automation system handles the following:

  • Price Quotes: Generating 2,600 quotes daily, now processed in 32 seconds, with expansion from truckload to less-than-truckload (LTL) quotes.

  • Load Tenders: Converting 5,500 email-based load tenders into shipment orders daily within 90 seconds.

  • Appointments: Automating pick-up and delivery schedules from email requests, achieving 3,000 daily appointments across over 26,000 locations in just 60 seconds.

In-Transit Visibility: When automated carrier updates fail, generative AI communicates directly with carriers, reducing the need for manual messaging by staff.
