After demand spiked as a result of the pandemic, the carrier joined Maersk and CMA CGM in entering the air freight market. MSC said on Monday that it is creating an air freight service, joining other ocean carriers in this endeavor. Following the acquisition of four Boeing 777-200F aircraft, the shipping behemoth will begin offering the service in early 2023. The freighters will be flown by Atlas Air, which placed the order for the aircraft in January 2022.

The new service, according to a statement from MSC, has been under development for "a few months" and will be a "complementary service to our ocean container shipping options." The carrier intends to service "important trade channels and numerous sectors," which customarily have substantial air freight transportation demands.

This is our entry into the industry, and we intend to keep looking at other ways to expand air cargo in a way that compliments our main line of business, container shipping,′′ MSC CEO Soren Toft said in a statement. According to the company, Jannie Davel, a former managing director of commercial at Delta Cargo, will be in charge of MSC's air cargo division and will assemble the team. Davel has held executive roles with DHL and Emirates SkyCargo over his nearly 30 years of air freight expertise.

After several shippers were driven to resort to air freight to help facilitate delivery due to pandemic congestion, MSC is the most recent ocean carrier to expand its air cargo services. While CMA CGM negotiated a 10-year air cargo deal with Air France-KLM in May, Maersk announced the launch of Maersk Air Cargo in April.
