Tesco stores and NE Suria Satu Sdn Bhd (NESS) have signed the largest long-term solar power purchase agreement in Malaysia, which will run for 20 years until 2040.

In the first phase, 15 Tesco stores nationwide will have solar photovoltaic (PV) panels installed on their rooftop spaces. It is estimated that the installation will be completed in October 2020, generating 18-gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy. This amount of clean energy can help reduce about 13,624 tonnes of carbon emissions which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.

“This push in environmental sustainability is just one of the many ways that we are doing to reduce our impact on the environment, which already includes measuring and publishing our food waste data and reducing the usage of single-use plastic bags in our stores,” said Tesco Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Paul Ritchie.
