Meta, formerly known as Facebook, opened its first-ever brick-and-mortar store in Silicon Valley, California on 9th May. According to Head of Meta Store Martin Gilliard, the shop will serve as a “gateway to the metaverse” by giving customers the opportunity to experience various virtual reality products including Portal video-calling devices and Oculus VR headsets.
Within the store, there is a separate cubicle with glass walls reserved for Meta’s selection of Ray-Ban smart glasses. Visitors are able to demo these products in a range of style, color, and lens variations. However, unlike other items which are readily available for purchase in-store, the glasses can only be ordered directly through Ray Ban’s retailer website.
“We’re not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it,” explained Gilliard. “Once people experience the technology, they can gain a better appreciation for it.” He also mentioned that Meta’s first physical store signifies the company’s expansion into the retail sector, away from its roots as a social media platform.
