Several Chinese e-commerce giants are taking an active role to alleviate the country’s labor shortage amidst the latest COVID-19 wave. JD.com, for instance, has recruited and mobilized 3246 fully-vaccinated personnel to help out with last-mile delivery in Shanghai. According to another news source, the company is also sending over 100 autonomous delivery vehicles that will be used to transport meals and PPE to the likes of mobile cabin hospitals, lockdown communities and delivery stations.

“From the perspective of business competition, this is also the best opportunity for JD.com to distinguish itself from its competitors,” said Xu Yong, Chief Advisor of a logistics market research platform cess.com. “Given JD Logistics’ competence in the express area, I think the way it is helping Shanghai could last a while,”‘ Xu added.

Cainiao Network, Alibaba Group’s logistics arm, is another player worth mentioning; it has created a fleet specifically for delivery of essential goods to the elderly in Shanghai. Over the past month, their truck drivers have dispatched approximately 10 tons of supplies to these individuals throughout Shanghai. Similarly, one of China’s largest non-government retailers Suning has also formed a delivery workforce to ensure timely distribution of materials to customers across the city.

As of today, 42 warehouses of e-commerce platforms in Shanghai have resumed operations, with many workers gradually returning to their posts. Data from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce revealed that there are over 18,000 service riders on duty and about 1.8 million customer orders are delivered each day.
