Supply Chain Dive: FedEx to Switch to EVs for a Carbon Free Future

Big transportation service groups have been keen on making the industry sustainable these recent years. With UPS committed to various fuel alternatives, FedEx also revealed its $2 billion plan to attain carbon-neutral operations, starting with converting its parcel pickup and delivery fleet to electric vehicles. 

Since 2012, the delivery corporation has saved 1.43 billion gallons of jet fuel and is looking to reduce even more aircraft fuel consumption in the future. Facility improvements towards energy efficiency and management, carbon-neutral shipping and packaging, Yale Center for Natural Carbon Capture are the next steps of the plan. 

However, the company acknowledged that eco-friendly parcel carriers are an important long-term solution to resolve the carbon emission problem. Half of FedEx Express vehicles will be EVs by 2025 and the total conversion will be completed by 2040. 

Fed Ex’s Chief Sustainability Officer Mitch Jackson stated that despite all the current effort, more has to be done: “The long-term health of our industry is directly linked to the health of the planet, but this effort is about more than the bottom line – it’s the right thing to do.”
