Cainiao, the logistics arm of Alibaba Group Holding and DHL will be investing 60 million euros (approximately $64.75 million USD) to build the largest network of delivery lockers in Poland. The new partnership will give the Chinese tech giant a foothold in this European market.
The project aims to improve the quality and speed of the country’s out-of-home delivery, which has notably increased in the last 3 years, making Poland an attractive market for foreign e-commerce groups such as Alibaba. The two countries are operating a total of 1200 parcels in the country and by merging their network, online shoppers in Poland will enjoy more flexibility with a higher number of access points.
“Poland is one of the fastest growing e-commerce markets in Europe, expected to double by 2027, and up to 40 per cent of consumers prefer to have shipments delivered to parcel lockers,” said Pablo Ciano, CEO of DHL eCommerce Solutions.
With a decent number of existing lockers, the new investment will focus more on setting up modern parcel lockers with user-friendly interfaces at key locations. According to a report from Strategy & Polska, Poland’s e-commerce market will continue to thrive in the future, reaching 187 billion Polish zloty by 2027. In 2023, it is projected to grow 13.7% year on year to 124 billion Polish zloty (US$28.4 billion).
“As we tap into the great potential of Europe’s e-commerce market, Cainiao strives to contribute to the growth of a sustainable logistics ecosystem by deepening our cooperation with our local partners,” said William Xiong, Cainiao’s chief strategy officer and general manager for Europe and Southeast Asia.
