The 11.11 Global Shopping Festival is an annual shopping event that started in 2009. Last year, Alibaba attracted about 800 million customers, reaching $74.1 billion in sales and as for 2021, it expects to surpass the 900 million mark.

This 13th 11.11 event will take place across 2 periods, from Nov 1st to Nov 3rd and on Nov 11th itself with the participation of 290,000 brands, 700 celebrities and brand representatives. Tmall will also be releasing more than 14 million deals.

Alibaba has chosen sustainability to be the theme for this year as the company strives to create a more inclusive and environmentally conscious experience this time:

“This year’s festival marks a new chapter for 11.11. We believe we must leverage the power of 11.11 to encourage sustainable development and promote inclusiveness to consumers, merchants and partners across our ecosystem.”, says Chris Tung, Chief Marketing Officer of  Alibaba Group.

In this event, eco-friendly products and brands will be highlighted. The platform will give out 100 million yuan($15.7 million) worth of “green” vouchers as an attempt to entice customers to purchase eco-friendly items. Lastly, On Nov 1st, the Alibaba Group will also introduce a package recycling program to promote sustainability spirit and reduce carbon footprint of the event.
