The biggest U.S retailer Amazon just announced their new technology called Just Walk Out, which allows customers to pay for their groceries while also skipping the checkout lines. This initiative will be rolled out in the newest Amazon Fresh Store in Bellevue, Washington.

This technology is not totally new to Amazon’s customers. But this is the first time it is launched in a full-sized grocery store. Until this week, the cashierless option was only available in small convenience stores such as Amazon Go and Amazon Go Grocery, Amazon Fresh stores in the UK and third-party retailers.

Upon entering the store, shoppers who want to use the Just Walk Out service will scan a QR code at the entrance via the Amazon app then scan their palm or insert a payment card. While shopping, the items in each customer’s cart are identified by computer vision, sensors, and deep learning. Once all the shopping is done, customers can just walk out and the app will automatically charge from the selected payment method and send them the bill.

Amazon is currently ahead of its competitors in applying cashierless technology but it remains to be seen whether it would work well in larger stores.
