We are back with another country vastly different in population and land size than our previous study on the State of E-Commerce in Singapore: Indonesia!

Indonesia has the 4th largest population in the world (right after China, India and the US) and has a rapidly growing e-commerce logistics landscape.

Some insights that stood out for us:

  • 39% of all shipment deliveries are made by Metro Jakarta, despite only making up 12% of the total population in Indonesia. As the digital sector grows in online commerce, it is estimated that Indonesia’s online commerce will grow from $55 billion to $65 billion in 2022.

  • E-commerce sites like Shopee, Lazada, Tokopedia and Bukalapak are also popular in Indonesia, with over 72 million visits to Shopee. E-commerce sites with the highest visitor traffic are dominated by local online marketplaces, but this may change as the Amazons of the world look to tap into this enormous market opportunity.

As compared to an average of 1.3 days in Singapore, domestic parcels take a slightly longer time to arrive in Indonesia. This comes at no surprise as Indonesia is a much larger country with almost 100 cities and surrounding islands.
