Sustainability in Retail
Sustainability in E-Commerce Logistics
Sustainability is no longer a choice but a requirement for logistics and retail businesses today. So what is the key in making your retail business sustainable? Aside from business success, IKEA India has been working on a sustainability vision and culture. Its sustainable strategies aim to reduce waste and costs, reduce negative environmental impact, and promote healthy, sustainable living. Apart from retail sustainability, logistics companies have also followed suit. DHL’s GoGreen product portfolio comprises innovative and circular solutions to help minimize their carbon footprint.
Consumers Are Demanding for Sustainable Brands and Products
Consumers are choosing to buy from retailers with sustainable and transparent business practices. In fact, 51% of shoppers consider sustainability to be a significant factor affecting their decision to purchase. This is another driving factor for retail, e-commerce and logistics businesses to embark on more sustainability-driven initiatives. According to Forrester Consulting, 44% of buyers worldwide are more willing to purchase from a brand that demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and has a sustainable retail strategy. 46% of shoppers intend to buy items with reusable product packaging. Furthermore, 50% of consumers claimed that whether or not a product is recyclable affects their purchasing decision.
Do Parcel Lockers Improve the Sustainability of Order Fulfillment?
In short, yes, using parcel lockers can help to improve the sustainability of the order fulfillment or last-mile delivery process. It is therefore reassuring to know that parcel lockers are growing in popularity among consumers around the world. For example, IKEA has launched a new click-and-collect parcel locker service, a sustainability initiative to reduce impact of last-mile deliveries into London, putting it closer to its sustainability goal of achieving zero-emission home delivery by 2025. Apart from parcel lockers, 19% of third-party logistics carriers are pioneering the usage of alternative fuels in their delivery vehicles, such as liquefied natural gas. With this, logistics companies hope to reduce their carbon footprint and develop an eco-friendly supply chain to support their long-term sustainability goals and targets. Also, several large truck manufacturers are investing in the technology of electric vehicles, which may spell the end of the internal combustion truck engine.
Link Between E-commerce Returns and Retail Sustainability
E-commerce returns and retail sustainability are inextricably linked. Assuring customers that they may return unsatisfactory things for free and conveniently has long been a motivator for conversion and customer retention. However, the returns culture and customer behavior of “purchasing more to return” have a substantial carbon footprint. In 2020, consumers returned approximately $428 billion in merchandise. With only roughly half of returned products being restocked, the half ended up in landfills. Retail rates of return have hit an all-time high, and the earth is suffering as a result. Retail businesses should try to minimize the environmental impact of the e-commerce returns process, and have returns policies that inspire a change in customer consciousness.
