Wired: IKEA Launches AR Platform for Digital Experiments

Everyday Experiments is a new platform launched by IKEA and its SPACE10 research lab, which will showcase various tech and design experiments to help people think differently about homes and spaces. These experiments will incorporate technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, augmented reality, and spatial intelligence technology.

For instance, “Point and Repair” allows consumers to discover different ways on how to repair worn or damaged furniture as well as find replacement parts.

Another interesting experiment is by design studio Bakken & Back called “Technocarpenter”. This experiment uses a combination of AR and VR technology to allow consumers to design their own chair. By simply moving their palm and finger around the virtual environment, users can ‘mold’ the chair to achieve the desired outcome.

Using this platform, IKEA hopes to highlight the potential of incorporating technology in homes and to inspire people to explore the many different possibilities in relation to the home and the spaces within.
