In anticipation of the tightening of COVID-19 restrictions, there was an increase in consumer spending on home improvement and stockpiling goods in the UK.

According to data from the British Retail Consortium and KPMG, sales in the UK increased by 5.6% in September compared with the same period last year.

“September saw a big improvement in retail sales growth,” said Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive at the BRC, whose survey covers about 60% of the retail industry in the UK.

“With office workers still at home for the foreseeable future, the sales of electronics, household goods, and home office products have remained high,” she added.

Whilst there was an overall growth in retail sales, the Financial Times noted that this appears to be primarily pandemic-driven and in-store sales of non-food items were still “very depressed”.
