DHL is introducing an AI-based software called IDEA in some of its warehouses to optimize pick routing and staff utilization.
The software evaluates and optimizes picking routes and distributes the workload among warehouse staff. For instance, by grouping orders based on location and prioritizing more time-critical shipments. Initial deployments of the software saw a reduction of distance traveled across the warehouse by up to 50%; while increasing productivity levels by up to 30%.
Here are some of the benefits of the new IDEA system:
- To improve routing for environments where the orders are small, but the SKU (store keeping unit) count within the warehouse is large.
- To increase warehouse staff efficiency with a system that groups orders together logically based on a variety of factors (e.g. location, customer, the width of aisles).
- To increase overall efficiency without major hardware changes and using the company’s existing infrastructure.
