Tech companies are focusing more and more on in-app shopping features, and Facebook is not missing out on this opportunity. Facebook will expand its Shops feature to WhatsApp, and add AR and AI tools to Instagram in the near future.
Shop features will be available on WhatsApp to make shopping via social media more accessible. On Instagram, they will also develop Rating and Review sections and integrate AR try-on experiences over the next few months. Merchants in the U.S. will be the first to test these tools. The company did not share which other countries will be able to access the Shops feature.
With more than 1.2 million monthly active users and more than 300 million monthly Shop visitors, expanding to Whatsapp will surely increase the reach of its Shops tool, not to mention the fact that Facebook is waiving fees for businesses till June 2022. The development of social commerce will also greatly benefit the platform.
According to a 2020 report by Poshmark, 58% of consumers find no problem in purchasing via social media instead of an official website. The content on Facebook and Instagram is also a great factor in the shopping decision of customers, with Facebook being the top platform where shoppers discovered and learned about products on social media, followed by Instagram and Pinterest.
