The conference season has officially started and we’re beginning with one of our favorite regions to visit – Australia! From last year’s trip to the Australia Retail Week to our experience winning the Inside Retail Live Pitchfest in 2017, we’re looking forward to being back and engaging with the local e-commerce community!
Australia’s e-commerce is thriving and retailers need to prepare for the year ahead
While it was a healthy year for the world’s largest retailers, 2018 was a split year for Australian retailers grappling with a slower-than-expected second half of 2019.
Commenting on the year past, David White, national leader of Deloitte’s Retail, Wholesale & Distribution Group said:
“Performance was strong earlier in the year as cheap credit and rising asset prices fuelled confidence to spend, however by year’s end we saw significant declines in household wealth through both falling house prices and share market declines,” “This weighed on the retail sector. Sales slowed through the year to produce a lean Christmas, and purchases of consumer durables starting to top out.”
This year, Australian retailers also need to pay attention to Amazon’s growing presence in Australia who entered the market end 2017. Amazon’s focus on customer experience, speedy delivery promise, and formidable omnichannel delivery networks will challenge the speed of Australia retailer’s fulfillment process.
In an e-commerce world where consumers expect to receive goods within the same day or next day, Amazon’s presence would raise consumers expectations on speedy delivery time.
More broadly, especially with the growth of artificial intelligence, concerns over data privacy and omnichannel customer experience becoming some of the biggest talking points for retailers in the region, local merchants will need to keep abreast with the changing world of retail and adapt to stay competitive.
