From 8 December 2020, users of Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp will see an option to add items to cart and send order requests to business accounts.
The new ‘carts’ feature hopes to simplify the shopping experience for customers purchasing multiple items from a WhatsApp business account.
According to WhatsApp, there were 50 million WhatsApp Business accounts globally as of July; 15 million of which were from India. DealShare, a social commerce startup based in Jaipur, is an example of a business that started its e-commerce journey on WhatsApp selling grocery and household essential products.
This feature launch is also an opportunity for WhatsApp to attain greater success through the booming e-commerce scene. Apart from WhatsApp’s payments application WhatsApp Pay, the company is looking to launch complementary features such as a shopping button and providing QR codes for businesses.
“WhatsApp is fast becoming a store counter to discuss products and coordinate sales. Catalogs have allowed people to quickly see what’s available and helped businesses organize their chats around particular items. With more and more shopping happening through chats, we want to make buying and selling even easier,” WhatsApp said.
