Decathlon, a sports retailer, is shifting to a marketplace model in the UK and is looking to invite new partners to sell on its website. This switch to a marketplace model offers their customers a wider range of quality sporting merchandise from different brands in addition to their own.
This move is not totally new and will be more popular in the future since research has shown that marketplaces grow twice as fast as e-commerce. That is why many retailers will transform into marketplace platforms.
In this new model, they have partnered with London startup Donda Cycling, UK retailer Pendle Bike Racks, and family-run yoga brand Corkspace. For Decathlon Belgium, 8.5% of all sales in Decathlon Belgium come from their marketplace which has already been launched.
The Decathlon marketplace is only available in the UK and in Belgium but this will expand internationally as time goes by. Decathlon marketplace is expected to bring over 1 billion euros of sales across Europe within 5 years.
