Google: e-Conomy SEA 2020 Report – Consumer Shift


Consumer behavior has changed over the last couple of months due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As per our previous feature, there were 40 million new Internet users as the pandemic accelerated digitization across Southeast Asia. 

So how has consumer behavior changed? Google e-Conomy SEA Report

Users were shifting online for food delivery and groceries as a result of the lockdowns across SEA. Companies similarly shifted their business online to reach out to capture consumers who had shifted to online shopping when physical stores were forced to close down.

In 2020, more than one-third of online commerce was contributed by new shoppers; with a large majority intending to continue shopping online.

Another shift in consumer behavior is that more shoppers are buying their food and groceries online. 47% of online grocery shoppers are new users; with 76% of them intending to continue in the future. 

Will this shift in consumer shopping behavior define the future of e-commerce and retail in Southeast Asia for the next 5 years?
