One of the largest supermarkets in the UK, Sainsbury’s, is planning to hire 12,000 seasonal workers this Christmas in anticipation of the huge demand expected. The growth of its online delivery operation has more than doubled since March this year.
These workers will be responsible for a variety of functions; from picking and packing to driving delivery vans, to support a volume of 750,000 online orders per week in December via delivery or click and collect.
“To help (customers) find everything they need and shop how they want, we’re recruiting thousands more Christmas colleagues than in previous years,” said Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury’s retail and digital director.
As part of its digitization efforts, the company has also rolled out its SmartShop system. This system allows customers to shop without visiting tills, ensuring that social distancing is maintained throughout the customer journey. The SmartShop system has already been implemented in over 1100 stores including 500 convenience stores.
Sainsbury’s also announced plans to hire an additional 75,000 employees by March next year, including 6,000 permanent roles. Most of these employees will be hired to support its digital operations.
