Alibaba’s autonomous delivery robots just made their one millionth e-commerce parcel delivery shortly after a year since its launch.

Alibaba has put into operation of 200 robots and they have reached more than 200,000 customers in 52 cities across 22 Chinese provinces. The robot Alibaba is using is called Xiaomanlv. It can carry about 50 packages at a time and cover 100 kilometers on a single charge.

The research on autonomous driving technology began as early as 2015 and Alibaba piloted Xiaomanlv on a smaller scale last year.

Alibaba applies a proprietary multi-sensor fusion solution and AutoDrive, its machine-learning platform, to power Xiaomanlv. Its algorithm was trained on a cloud computing-driven testing platform, which simulates over 10,000 possible scenarios, such as extreme weather situations and poor visibility at night.

“One important breakthrough is our ability to use advanced algorithms to achieve a low-cost, mass deployment of our self-driving vehicles across communities and campuses,” head of DAMO Academy, Wang Gang shared.

In the next 3 years, Alibaba expects to raise the number of robots to 10,000, which equates to handling an average of 1 million packages a day.
